On March 14th (Thursday), at 15:00, Minister Kang Do-Hyung of Oceans and Fisheries reviewed the search and rescue efforts related to recent fishing vessel accidents and the status of support for bereaved families and families of the missing at the Ministry’s General Situation Room at the Sejong Government Complex, with participation from the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, Ministry of National Defense, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Korea Coast Guard, and local governments. On March 9th (Saturday) at around 06:43, the offshore longline fishing vessel 2nd Haesinho capsized 37 nautical miles south of Yokjido Island in Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do; on March 14th (Thursday), at around 04:15, a large twin-deck trawler 102 Haejonho sank off the coast of Tongyeong City, causing casualties. The search for missing people is underway. Minister Kang asked the officials “to put in all efforts for the search of missing persons and support for the families.” He also asked for a “thorough root-cause analysis of the accidents, implementation of measures to prevent accidents, and special measures to save lives quickly in case of accidents, while raising safety awareness at fishing sites.”
