Minister of Oceans and Fisheries(Kang Do-Hyung) visited Tongyeong, Gyeongsangnam-do, one of the main oyster production regions in Korea, to inspect working and hygiene conditions in oyster shucking centers as well as the processing and management of oyster shells, and encouraged fishermen devoted to the production of oysters. The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries plans to modernize a total of 130 oyster shucking facilities over a five-year period starting in 2024. Minister Kang personally explained the details of the project to modernize working conditions to the oyster sea farm workers, who spend most of their time sitting on low chairs with their backs bent. He also inspected the pre-treatment process of oyster shells, which have now become resources for recycling with the enforcement of the Act on the Promotion of Recycling of Fishery By-products in 2022, and called on oyster farmers to take an active interest in recycling oyster shells.
