On July 21st, Minister Cho Seung Hwan of Oceans and Fisheries visited the Jeollanam-do province to inspect the impact of heavy rain on marine debris collection sites. The latest torrential rain is estimated to have generated about 6,000 tons of marine debris nationwide. Such waste may flow onshore or into fish farms, causing damages to the environment or facilities, and may also cause disruptions at ports by impacting vessel operations. Therefore, its quick collection and treatment is essential. The Ministry supports local governments through Marine Environment Protection and River Estuary Waste Collection programs for the quick recovery and disposal of marine waste. If necessary, the Ministry plans to provide additional support from its separately budgeted reserve fund. Moreover, 22 port cleaning vessels operate in national waters, with the aim of maintaining normal operations for national facilities, including ports.
