Enactment of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Lighthouse Heritage

- Establishing detailed procedures for utilizing lighthouses as marine tourism resources, including procedures for a lighthouse heritage preservation and management system and procedures for the project to create a lighthouse marine cultural space

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that the draft Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Lighthouse Heritage was passed at the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, January 14 ahead of the enforcement of the Act on January 24, 2025.

Having illuminated the sea route for the safe navigation of ships for the past 120 years, lighthouses also serve as a marine tourist attraction visited by an average of 3.78 million people annually. The Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Lighthouse Heritage was enacted in January last year to establish a comprehensive policy for conserving and utilizing lighthouses as sustainable marine tourism resources

This enactment of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Lighthouse Heritage stipulates detailed criteria and procedures delegated by law, such as: ▲ changes to the basic plan for lighthouse conservation and utilization; ▲ matters related to specialized institutions for lighthouse heritage designation and investigation; ▲ criteria for designation, designation change, and cancellation of development zones for lighthouse maritime cultural space; ▲ matters to be reviewed for approving lighthouse maritime cultural space development projects, and; ▲ National Lighthouse Museum project.

“I expect the enactment of the Enforcement Decree of the Act on the Conservation and Utilization of Lighthouse Heritage to serve as an opportunity to establish a lighthouse conservation and management system and utilize lighthouses as a marine tourism resource frequently visited by the public. We will continue to do our best to conserve and manage lighthouse heritage systematically and publicize the historical and cultural value of lighthouses widely,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
