Opening the Era of Smart Shipping and Ports with High-Precision Location Information Service with Margin of Error of 5 cm
- Holding the Declaration Ceremony for Marine High-Precision Location Information Service on Wednesday, December 11 - Service provided through MBC and three telecommunication companies by drastically improving positioning error to 5cm
The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF, Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would hold the Declaration Ceremony for Marine High-Precision Location Information Service at the FKI Tower in Seoul on Wednesday, December 11 to introduce the marine high-precision location information service technology that completed R&D this year and to commercialize the technology in cooperation with the industry and others.
The service declaration ceremony will be attended by Minister Kang Do-hyung along with approximately 100 industry officials from the broadcasting and communications industries including MBC, SKT, KT, and LGU+, as well as companies and public institutions that are expected to utilize high-precision location information service technology.
Developed with a KRW 14.5 billion investment by MOF from 2020 to 2024, the marine high-precision positioning service technology significantly improves the positioning error from the original 10 meters to 5 centimeters for location data received from GPS. This service will be available immediately after the launch ceremony through the MBC broadcasting network and the SKT, KT, and LGU+ Internet communication networks.
This service is expected to be utilized widely not only in maritime sectors such as smart ports, autonomous vessels, and marine surveys but also in fields like automotive, land logistics, and precision agriculture. For example, smart ports can improve operational efficiency by transmitting the exact location of containers to the control center during automatic unloading. Additionally, applying this service to autonomous vessels will enable them to navigate to their destination and dock safely at ports automatically with centimeter-level accuracy. Furthermore, the service is expected to be utilized in various fields related to the Fourth Industrial Revolution.
"For the location information industries such as ship location control and drone operations that are widely used in our daily lives, the development of reliable, high-precision location information is essential. In the future, the government will actively collaborate with the industry to ensure that high-precision location information services are spread across various sectors, allowing people to lead more convenient lives," Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
