Public and Private Sectors Communicating on the Implementation of Regulations for International Shipping Decarbonization

2024 Briefing Session on Marine Environment Policies and Technology Standards for Future Fuel-Powered Ships (Busan, October 10)

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) will hold the 2024 briefing session on marine environmental policies and technology standards for future fuel-powered ships—targeting the shipping, shipbuilding, and related industries—at the Busan Port International Exhibition & Convention Center on October 10.

This briefing will cover the outcomes of the discussions held at the 82nd session of the Marine Environment Protection Committee (MEPC 82, September 30 - October 4, 2024) of the International Maritime Organization (IMO), including △ mid-term measures for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from ships, △ effectiveness of the Ship Energy Efficiency Index (EEDI) and Ship Carbon Intensity Indicator (CII) system in preventing air pollution, △ establishment of approval procedures for modifications to ballast water treatment systems, and △ regulations on marine plastic pollution and underwater radiated noise.

In particular, following the adoption of the “IMO 2023 Greenhouse Gas Reduction Strategy” in July last year aimed at achieving “2050 Carbon Neutrality in International Shipping,” the trends and discussion results regarding the fuel standard and carbon tax—which is set to take effect in 2027 to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by ships—will be fully shared with Korea’s industry. The goal is to explore future implementation measures.

Moreover, to expedite the application of eco-friendly alternative fuels such as hydrogen and ammonia in shipping, the current status and future plans for developing safety guidelines for each fuel as well as updates to international standards for liquefied gas carriers—including those using alternative fuels—will also be explained.
