The First Eco-Friendly Fuel-Powered Cruise Ship to Enter a Korean Port

The first LNG-powered cruise ship visited Busan Port after the expansion of the LNG fuel supply infrastructure

Continues to promote the expansion of cruise port infrastructure and development of tourism products through the cooperation of related ministries

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) and the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) announced that the 54,000-ton eco-friendly fuel-powered cruise ship Silver Nova entered the Busan Port International Passenger Terminal Cruise Pier at 8:00 AM on October 7.

Silver Nova is an LNG-powered ship launched in 2023 by Silversea, a luxury brand under the Royal Caribbean Group of the United States. It has the following specifications: length of 244 m; width of 30 m; 11 decks; and a capacity of 728 passengers serviced by 556 crew members.

In line with the paradigm shift in ship fuel for the decarbonization of international shipping, the cruise ship industry is increasing the proportion of LNG-powered cruise ships that can reduce CO2 emissions by 20% to 30% compared to standard ship fuel.

In response to these environmentally friendly trends, the MOF has been taking measures, such as supplying fuel to LNG ships via a ship-to-ship mode in August of this year and building eco-friendly infrastructure. The entry of Silver Nova is expected to serve as an opportunity for cruise lines to promote Busan Port as a home port for eco-friendly cruise ships based on its environmentally friendly port infrastructure.
