The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that it will hold the 1st Antarctic Forum from Monday, September 30 to Wednesday, October 2 at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul and Korea Polar Research Institute in Songdo-gu, Incheon.
The Antarctic Forum is an event being held for the first time this year to increase the general public's understanding of Antarctica, share domestic and international research trends related to Antarctica, and provide an opportunity to discuss comprehensively solutions to current issues such as environmental protection in Antarctica.
It consists of three sessions: ▲ Antarctic Environmental Policy Conference, ▲ Antarctic Knowledge Dialogue, and ▲ International Polar Science Symposium. The Antarctic Environmental Policy Conference and Antarctic Knowledge Dialogue will be held on Wednesday, October 2 at The Plaza Hotel in Seoul, and the International Polar Science Symposium will be held on Monday, September 30 and Tuesday, October 1 at the Korea Polar Research Institute.
The Antarctic Environmental Policy Conference will feature research institutions in the fields of Antarctic science and environment, civil society organizations, and policymakers reviewing domestic and international efforts for Antarctic environmental protection and discuss the direction to take moving forward.
The Antarctic Knowledge Dialogue to be held next will shed light on Antarctica's unknown space from various angles. It will introduce to the general public Antarctican governance in the international community, Antarctic scientific research in Korea, and challenges in Antarctica. Captain Kim Young-mi of The North Face Athlete Team, who reached the South Pole without supplies in 2023, will present her vivid experience.
Anyone interested in Antarctica can attend the Antarctic Environmental Policy Conference and the Antarctic Knowledge Dialogue. Participants can pre-register via the QR code on the poster or register on-site.
In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of the Jang Bogo Antarctic Research Station, the International Polar Science Symposium will review past research achievements and hold in-depth discussions by domestic and international Antarctic experts on climate change in Antarctica and its impacts.
