Remains of Overseas Deep-sea Fishermen Who Died in the Line of Duty Return to the Embrace of Their Beloved Homeland

- Two remains delivered to the bereaved families and relocated to Korea

The remains of two deep-sea fishermen who were the driving force of Korea's economy in the 1970s and 1980s but were killed in an accident and buried in a foreign land are returning to their beloved homeland and families.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that it will relocate to Korea the remains of two Korean deep-sea fishing crew members who were buried in cemeteries in Samoa and Tahiti in the South Pacific. A memorial service will be held at the conference room of the Korea Overseas Fisheries Association, and the remains will be delivered to the bereaved families.

Since 2002, MOF has managed 284 cemeteries in 7 countries including Samoa, Tahiti, and Las Palmas, Spain with the help of local Korean associations through the Overseas Seafarers' Cemetery Maintenance Project.

Since 2014, the ministry has attempted repatriation in consultation with the local government when bereaved families wish to move the remains back to Korea. A total of 36 remains have been returned, including the 2 this time, leaving 282 overseas.
