Beware of Marine Accidents in the Fall, When Ship Traffic is Heavy
- Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) to implement safety measures for the fall season to prepare for marine accidents that can cause casualties and electric vehicle fires
The MOF is implementing the Autumn Marine Accident Prevention Program to prepare for various vulnerabilities, such as increased traffic during the peak fishing season and worsening weather conditions such as typhoons, to ensure that people can safely use the sea during the Chuseok holiday.
The Ministry will focus on major maritime accidents such as collisions, turnovers, and safety accidents that result in many casualties. The Ministry conducts customized safety inspections for each ship type and provides safety information through sea navigation radio broadcasts, etc., to prevent such accidents from recurring. Moreover, it plans to support consulting on major accidents to prevent safety accidents that may occur in workplaces.
It will also strengthen safety management to prepare for the increase in electric vehicle transportation, conduct public-private joint training to prevent electric vehicle fires, and distribute the Guidelines on the Prevention and Response to Electric Vehicle Fires, which are intended as a supplement to evacuation methods, etc.
It will also inspect and operate a disaster response system in advance to prepare for worsening weather conditions such as typhoons, conduct safety inspections of marine and port facilities, and establish a rapid response system in the event of a typhoon. This will reinforce readiness to protect human lives and minimize property damages by ensuring ships can take refuge in advance.
The Ministry will spread a culture of maritime safety by promoting public participatory programs, such as a maritime safety contents contest and safety campaigns for ship workers.
