Opening of the European Center for Joint Research in Advanced Marine Mobility

-Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering (KRISO) under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) to carry out joint research and cooperation based in Norway

The Korea Research Institute of Ships & Ocean Engineering, currently under the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF), announced that it will open and begin the full-scale operation of a base for Korea-Europe advanced marine mobility research (KRISO Europe Center) in Oslo, Norway.

The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has set a carbon neutrality target for the international shipping sector by 2050 and established standards for autonomous ships, which are expected to transform the existing ship market into cutting-edge marine mobility*. As a result, competition for dominance in the global market is intensifying.

The MOF decided to establish a local research base in Europe, which leads the field of advanced marine mobility technology, in order to respond proactively to paradigm shifts and secure new growth engines.

Representatives from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Norway, domestic and foreign shipping companies, shipbuilding companies, equipment companies, the Norwegian Institute of Marine Technology (SINTEF-Ocean AS), and the Swedish National Research Institute (RISE) will attend the opening ceremony, which is due to be held today and will include a signboard hanging ceremony.

The KRISO Europe Center will build a network with industrial, academic and research institutes in major European countries and, based on this, will carry out international joint research, development and verification, host international conferences, collect policy and technology information, publish information magazines, and support the training of new and professional personnel.
