- Vice Minister Park Sung-hoon holds interview with the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean -

On October 19th (Thursday), Vice Minister Park Sung-hoon of Oceans and Fisheries held talks with Peter Thomson, the UN Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for the Ocean, in Seoul.

The meeting was held on the occasion of Peter Thomson's visit to Seoul to attend the plenary session of the Council of Presidents of the United Nations’ General Assembly, where he serves as the 71st President of the UN General Assembly for promoting the implementation of UN Sustainable Development Goal 14 (Conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development).

During the meeting, Vice Minister Park introduced various efforts undertaken by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to implement UN SDG 14, including ▲ the marine ecosystem conservation and restoration policy, which aims to systematically manage 'tidal flats' that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage, and ▲ the fishing gear key deposit program, which will be implemented for the first time in the world next January.

He also suggested strengthening international cooperation for sustainable oceans through linkages between Korea’s Our Ocean Conference to be held in 2025, and the UN Ocean Conference to be held in France the same year.
