- Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries signs MOU with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and 4 major hypermarket franchises to promote seafood consumption -

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Cho Seung Hwan) will be signing an MOU with the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives and 4 major hypermarket distributors (E-mart, Lotte Mart, Homeplus, and GS Retail) for the revitalization of seafood consumption at the Noryangjin Fish Market on the morning of September 13th (Wednesday).

Since the discharge of contaminated water from Japan’s nuclear power plant, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries of Korea has injected an additional reserve budget of KRW 80 billion to revitalize domestic seafood consumption, implementing diverse consumption promotion actions, such as hosting of seafood discount events, offering onnuri gift certificate redemption programs at traditional markets, and increasing the issuance of Zero Pay gift certificates. In particular, government-backed discounts have been increased from 20% to 30% for seafood discount events featuring online and offline distributors, and the per capita discount cap has been increased from KRW 10,000 to KRW 20,000.

Through this MOU, the 4 major hypermarket franchises taking part in the seafood discount event and the National Federation of Fisheries Cooperatives, which represents the producers, plan to further collaborate in the areas of ▲ securing the safety of domestic seafood, ▲ improving the effectiveness of discount events to revitalize consumption, and ▲ the sharing of data to identify seafood consumption trends.
