- Island residents to apply in person at town, village, or district administrative welfare centers according to their registered legal addresses, starting August -

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister Cho Seung Hwan) will provide additional support for delivery fees to island residents during the month of September with the aim of stabilizing the livelihoods of islanders during the upcoming Chuseok holidays. To this end, respective local governments are to announce and explain the support program to island residents and collect applications in advance from August.

To date, island residents have endured a heavy burden since they were charged additional delivery fees ranging between a minimum of KRW 3,000 up to KRW 10,000, on top of the basic fees for each courier service.

In response, to ease the burden on the islanders, the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries has decided to implement a pilot program to provide financial support for additional delivery fees relating to courier services from September 1st to 30th.

Island residents wishing to receive support for additional delivery fees can visit and submit applications to the local administrative welfare centers in their current administrative jurisdictions during the application period. The respective local government offices plan to verify the courier usage info of the applicants and pay out the support funds to the bank accounts of the applicants.

Minister Cho Seung Hwan explained, “We hope to ease the burden of using courier services, a necessity in our daily lives, for the island residents, and we will continue to develop policy measures to improve the settlement conditions to guarantee more convenience in the lives of the islanders.”
