- Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries Hosts Seminar for Improving Maritime Anti-terrorism and Security Capabilities (Nov.29 (Tues)) -

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (Minister: CHO Seung-Hwan) announced that it will host a security seminar to improve response capabilities against maritime terrorism and piracy at the Busan Chamber of Commerce & Industry on November 29th (Tuesday).

Since 2005, the Ministry continues to hold annual security seminars to improve the response capacity against maritime terrorism and piracy. The seminar provides updates on recent trends in domestic and international terrorism and actions for preventing piracy and offers training for owners and crew of internationally operated vessels engaged in security roles.

More than 200 individuals from government offices, international shipping companies, vessel inspection agencies, and security training institutions plan to participate in this year's security seminar, where there will be presentations and discussions on diverse agenda, including major defects in ship security screening and response actions thereof, naval operations, and collaboration with special security guards. In addition, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs will provide an overview of the main content relating to the maritime sector from the UN Security Council's resolution for sanctions against North Korea, while providing guidelines for Korean ship operators and industry stakeholders to avoid any engagement in activities that violate the resolution, such as those related to the illegal acquisition of ships by North Korea.

Director Lee Min-Joong of the Maritime Safety Management Division at MOF expressed his hope that “Korea's maritime safety benefits from the information on domestic and international maritime security and piracy trends.” He added that “the government will continue to closely collaborate with stakeholder institutions and the industry to prevent maritime terrorism and piracy.”
