- Fisheries MOU Signed Following Port Development MOU Signed During Presidential Tour Of 3 South East Asian Countries

 

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok) announced that it signed “Korea-Myanmar MOU on fisheries cooperation” with Minister of Agriculture, Livestock and Irrigation Aung Thu of Myanmar, which is the world’s 9th largest producer* of fisheries on 26 November (Tue).

 

* Annual fish production ranks 10th in the world, with 2.15 million ton per year. Farmed fish production is world’s 9th largest, with 1.05 million ton per year (as of 2017, FAO statistics (published in August 2019))

 

The MOU includes ▲ exchange of scientific/technical data and information on fisheries/aquaculture ▲ experts, scientists, trainee exchange and joint study ▲ holding training programs and conferences. All in all, the MOU encompasses fisheries/aquaculture technology support and provisions for cooperation that enables Korean companies to enter overseas markets.

 

Also, both countries agreed to hold joint fisheries committee (annual meeting, hosted alternately), and to exchange opinions on cooperative projects including ODA*.

 

* Korea and Myanmar is planning a project to establish foundation for inland fish farming. From 2020, in cooperation with FAO, the two countries will work to spread and establish voluntary fisheries management in the region. This will go to great lengths to helping Myanmar fishing villages’ independence and development

 

During the President’s visit to Myanmar this September, MOF had “Korea-Myanmar MOU on shipping, shipyard modernization, development and management of logistics and ports” signed, preparing a groundwork for Korean companies to participate in the Kings Bank Port and Distripark Development Project in Dala, Myanmar.

 

* Establishing basic plan for Myanmar Ports, including Kings Bank Port, and Feasibility Study (MOF, ‘19.1.~`20.4. / 1.01 billion KRW)

 

Minister MOON, Seong-Hyeok said “MOF signed two MOUs with Myanmar in the period of just 3 months. This shows that our bilateral cooperation on oceans and fisheries is expanding. MOF will continue to work hard to strengthen friendly, cooperative bilateral relationship going forward.”
