Venue to Contemplate Better Use of NSR

NSR International Seminar is held on Dec. 14 to promote Arctic resource transport

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF; Minister Kim, Young-Choon) holds the 6th NSR (Northern Sea Route) International Seminar at convention center of Busan International Passenger Terminal on December 14 to share updated information on NSR and promote relative projects of Korean businesses.

The MOF has hosted the Seminar since 2011 to discuss use of NSR where thawing of Artic ice by global warming has ironically raised the possibility to take.

Convened corresponding to the Artic Cooperation Week (December 12-15), the event marks 6th this year inviting approximately 200 attendees from industry, academy, government and overseas from the U.S., Russia, Norway, Finland and China.

While having a history of 5-time traffics via NSR commencing in 2013, Korea should secure the stable level of cargo volume for sustainable navigation.

Under the theme of “Transport of Arctic Resources to Asian Market”, the Seminar offers sessions for presentation and discussion on “NSR’s today & tomorrow”, “development & transport of Artic resources” and “infrastructure of NSR traffics & its prospect”.

Also, detailed information of Arctic resource development projects will be shared led by Deputy Director General Nikolay Monko of NSR division of the Ministry of Transport of Russia; Head of GECON, a consulting company of Russia; and an official charge of logistics in Yamal LNG, a representative development project.

The sessions would expectedly provide a great opportunity to join the NSR business to Korean companies to obtain Arctic resources for sustainable NSR traffic.

Director General Um Ki-doo of Shipping and Logistics Bureau of the MOF stated that “NSR is proposed as one of 9 strategies for New Nordpolitik of Korean government. As Korean government has constantly supported businesses for NSR traffic, industrial experiences to date are hopefully leveraged to promote the traffic with effective use of NSR”.
