MOF to Conduct Training for Fisheries Industry Professionals Jointly with New Zealand’s NIWA

- Joint research on fishery resources assessment between NIFS and NIWA

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF, Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced on Monday, February 3 that it would conduct a training for fisheries industry professionals as part of the Korea-New Zealand Free Trade Agreement (FTA) Fisheries Cooperation Project. In this training, fisheries professionals from the National Institute of Fisheries Science (NIFS) will visit the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) in New Zealand to conduct joint research on fisheries resource assessment.

The Korea-New Zealand Fisheries Cooperation Project has been promoted since 2016 to expand fisheries technology and human exchanges between the two countries in accordance with the Korea-New Zealand FTA concluded in December 2015. In particular, the fisheries industry professional training project is the leading program focusing on activating research and exchanges between fisheries experts from both countries.

Through this training, the two organizations plan to discuss ▲measures to improve the quality of fishery resource assessment data, ▲cases of building resource assessment models, and ▲feasibility of applying the New Zealand resource assessment model in Korea. The program will further strengthen the fisheries cooperation system between Korea and New Zealand and contribute to reinforcing fisheries resource management capabilities.

“It is meaningful that this training program will allow the two countries to share advanced research achievements and experiences in the fisheries sector and exchange knowledge directly. We will continue to work to enhance the level of Korea’s fisheries resource management and evaluation technology and contribute further to the development of the global fisheries sector,” Minister Kang Do-hyung said.
