International Conference on Fishing Communities, World Communication Forum for Fishing Community Policy Discussing Sustainable Fishing Community Development in Jeju

-Growing into a conference for international communication on fishing communities with the participation of 60 organizations from 30 countries

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF, Minister Kang Do-hyung) announced that it would hold the 2024 International Conference on Fishing Communities from Sunday, November 24, to Wednesday, November 27 at the Jeju International Convention Center (ICC) in cooperation with the Korea Maritime Institute and Jeju Special Self-Governing Province.

Established in Korea in 2023, the International Conference on Fishing Communities is an international event attended by government and fishermen representatives from about 30 countries, fisheries experts, and domestic fishing communities. It discusses common issues facing fishing communities worldwide such as climate change, population decline, vulnerability to disaster, and ways to cooperate.

This conference will focus on the theme “One Sea, One Fishing Village: Challenges and Opportunities for Fishing Villages in the Era of Transformation" and present sustainable development measures for fishing villages through in-depth presentations and discussions by domestic and international fisheries authorities and experts in five official sessions.

Moreover, side events will include a meeting of government representatives, a networking event between the "2026 Yeosu Island Expo Organizing Committee" and participating countries with islands, and the National Fisheries Village Leaders' Conference.

“The government has implemented the fishing village revitalization project to solve the challenges faced by fishing villages and improved the economic foundation and living environment of these communities by establishing initiatives such as enhancing the vitality of fishing villages and coastal areas. Through this International Conference on Fishing Communities, we expect to find sustainability for fishing villages in this era of crisis and transformation by combining the policy experiences of various countries with a spirit of cooperation and solidarity,” said Minister of Oceans and Fisheries Kang Do-hyung.
