Youths from fishing villages off to New Zealand to participate in local language training

- Providing opportunities such as participating in regular classes in local middle and high schools linked with the Korea-New Zealand FTA

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries (MOF) announced that participants of the “2024 Language Training for Fishing Village Youth*” program—implemented as part of the Korea-New Zealand FTA’s Fisheries Cooperation Program—will leave for New Zealand on July 19. This training program will be held for four weeks during the summer vacation period at middle and high schools near Wellington, New Zealand.

The Korea-New Zealand Fisheries Cooperation Program began in 2016 to strengthen the global capabilities of future generations from fishing villages following the conclusion of the Korea-New Zealand FTA. In particular, the language learning program serves as a valuable opportunity for middle and high school students in fishing villages with poor educational environments. It has been suspended since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but will resume this year.

This time, 71 young people* applied, with 16 ultimately selected through a lottery. The selected language training participants will study under the regular curriculum of the New Zealand school system, stay with local homestay families, and have an opportunity to experience global culture.
